Age 99, Peg died Monday, August 29, 2011 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was a life-long resident of Michigan. Mrs. Hartz was born in Grand Blanc, MI, the daughter of Walter Ashley & Gladys (Laing) Vast Binder.
She was educated at Simmons College in Boston, married Frank M. Hartz in his senior year at M.I.T. in 1933. Two of her three children survive. The young family lived in Rosedale Park in Detroit where Mrs. Hartz was active in those activities involving her family. She was active in the PTA and she served a year as President. She co-led a Girl Scout troop of twenty-seven girls for four years. She assisted the grade school music teacher in organizing the program and busing the children to the early Saturday morning classical music concerts at Symphony Hall for three years. She was actively involved in the Woman’s Association and programs of her church. Mrs. Hartz was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor. Mrs. Hartz was a talented cook and consummate homemaker. Her greatest joy was hosting dinner parties for friends and family. The setting was beautiful, the food delicious and attractively presented. She appreciated fine fabrics and sewed most of her and her daughter’s clothes. Early on, her husband suffered a severe debilitating illness which lasted until his death in September,1979. It was then that she began a career outside her home. Her employment lasted twenty seven years, eighteen years in social work.
Family surviving are a son, Dr. John W. Hartz (Anne) of Winston-Salem, NC and grandson, Thomas E. Hartz of Winston-Salem, NC; a daughter, Ann Kathryn Loker (Theodore) of Whitehall, MI; grandson, William T. Loker (Elizabeth) and a special love, little Rebecca Ann Loker, her great granddaughter, of Rockford, MI. Mrs Hartz was predeceased by an infant son and by her granddaughter, Kristin Anne Hartz, who was killed in an automobile accident.
Private interment will be at Smith Hill Cemetery in Otisville, MI. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Chelsea Retirement Community. Arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea.
