Helen (Sosnoski) DeWeese, 96, died on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the Chelsea Retirement Community (CRC) in Chelsea, Michigan.

Born in Freeland, Pennsylvania in 1916, she was a graduate of the Philadelphia Hospital School of Nursing.   Early in her career, practicing as a surgical nurse, Helen met and married Dr. Marion S. (Bill) DeWeese, the love of her life, while they both were working at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. During their journey together they resided in Texas, where Helen pursued additional education, earning a bachelor’s degree.  They later lived in California and Missouri but returned to Ann Arbor, which they always considered as their family home.

Helen was active with numerous charitable organizations throughout her life.  She always looked forward to spending time with family and friends, sewing, reading, and traveling to special places with her husband Bill.  She was a nature lover who enjoyed gardening, nurturing her wildflowers and feeding the raccoons and squirrels that visited her daily.  At the family cottage, on Traverse Bay, she looked forward to her walks on the shoreline in search of Petoskey stones and each winter she enthusiastically scoured the beach for special sea shells on Sanibel Island, Florida.

Helen was preceded in death by Bill, her husband of 61 yrs. in 2002, sister Stella and brothers Anthony, Walter and Alfred. She is survived by her sister Laura of Freeland, Pennsylvania; and three daughters, Diane (Bob) Ryan of Holland, Michigan, Dawn (Dudley) Holmes of Chelsea, Michigan and Pamela (Geoff) Gorse of St. Louis, Missouri.   She dearly loved her seven grandchildren, Christopher Ryan, Kelly (Nick) Schetzsle, Heather Holmes, Scott (Meghan) Holmes, Kevin (Maleeda) Holmes,  Gwendolyn and Sabrina Gorse and three great-grandchildren, Ryan Hope Schetzsle, Drew Schetzsle and Oliver Holmes.

Helen will always be remembered as a kind hearted, loving and dedicated spouse, mother and grandmother. She loved life and the time she had with family and friends. She will be missed by all those who knew her.

Additionally, Helen’s family wishes to thank Arbor Hospice and the wonderful staff at CRC for the tremendous care and concern shown to their mother.  A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Cole Funeral Chapel.
