devoted husband, father of three daughters, and phenomenal musician, died suddenly on June 3rd, 2025. He was at his dream home in Chelsea, Michigan, where he and his wife Kathy moved in 2020 after living in Ann Arbor for 45 years. He had just turned 75. Roger was born April 4, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan to Charles Lawrence, and Audrey Margaret Holtz (nee Williston).

Roger grew up in Birmingham, MI and graduated from Seaholm High School in 1968. He then went to the University of Michigan School of Music where he earned his Bachelor of Choral Music Education, with a focus on conducting. He was involved in a myriad of musical groups, including the Youth for Understanding Chorale, Michigan Men’s Glee Club, and the U of M Chamber Choir. At one point, he was a member of twelve choirs at the same time. Roger never did anything on a small scale.

This musical savant then moved to Midland, Michigan, where he taught High School choral music and met the woman who was to be his great love, Kathy (Kathleen) Heffernan. They married in 1974, and moved to Ann Arbor the next year. He started work at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital as a transporter, eventually becoming a purchasing agent. His girls loved visiting him at his office, where he would give them treasures like latex gloves (which they would make into balloons), pen lights, and whistles. In addition to the hospital, he worked part-time as a musician at Christ the King Catholic Church in Ann Arbor, MI. Roger was hired on full-time as Music Director at Christ the King in 2000.

Attending Mass where Roger led music was a holy adventure. He knew how to pull the most passion and emotion out of a choir, which filled the entire church, and our hearts, with worship. After his retirement in 2017, Roger volunteered at the Saint Mary Mission in Flint, MI doing handyman work, and continued to compose, play, and lead music.

Roger was tremendously loved by many, though he did not realize this. He was humble and kind and led his life in this way. He took his family on summer vacation every year, camping in National Parks across the country—even in the rain. He loved to read, landscape around the house, and was a Michelin star breakfast maker. Roger was lighthearted, intelligent, and generous and he instilled a love of nature, music, and service in his family and friends.

Roger is survived by his wife of 51 years, Kathy. He is also survived by his daughters, Bridget, (Austin, TX), Margaret, (Eagle River, Alaska), Christine (Livermore, CO) and her honey, Craig Pytlik; brother Charles “Chuck” Holtz; sister, Carol (Dana) Holtz-Martin; and many nieces, nephews, and Godchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Audrey; in-laws, Dr. Daniel and Beverly Heffernan; and his nephew, Chris Stout.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 10th, 2025, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Ann Arbor, with a scripture service starting at 6:30 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, June 11th, 11:00 am at Christ the King Catholic Church, with visitation starting at 10:00 am. The funeral will be live-streamed; a link is provided below. Luncheon will follow the mass. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Chelsea. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Clinic, https://thehopeclinic.org/, or Saint Mary Mission Flint, 2500 North Franklin, Flint, MI 48506. Please put “Catholic Worker Fund” in the memo. Arrangements were entrusted to Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.

I’ve known Roger & Kathy for a long time..back in the days of “community”! Those were my favorite years! I was fortunate enough to know both Roger & Kathy who took me & my daughter Shannon under their wings for many years (I was a single parent) helping me feel part of their family!! Their daughter Bridget is the same age as Shannon!! Sorry this is so long, but this is my tribute to a good & holy man! Thank you Roger & Kathy! Rest in peace Roger!!

I knew and sang with Roger in the 1970s and 1980s in the Word of God Music chorus and many records we produced. I especially liked his music leadership at Christ the King. I’ll never forget the time he sang a new song Don Fishel has just composed at a charismatic conference in the Notre Dame football stadium with 30,000 people—“Proclai m his marvelous deeds…”. When he hit the last high note “The Lord is King!” The stadium exploded in cheering and applause. I can only imagine the joy he must feel singing the praise of God in heavenly choirs. I long for the day when we will all meet again in the everlasting choir of love and praise of our Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Alleluia!

What a wonderful gift God gave us in Roger! I appreciate so much all his leadership with worship. He absolutely knew that good worship is driven by love: love of God Himself but love for others to help them enter into God's love through worship. There are so many times that I just felt nearer to God when he led worship. May God be glorified through the genuine gift of himself to God and others through his leadership in worship.

I also loved working with Roger. He was a key collaborator in organizing CTK Pentecost conferences in 2005 and 2006. Those conferences did a lot to reignite charismatic fire at CTK.

I also loved his great sense of humor and wit. Always made me laugh!

The souls of many have been touched by this man. May your reward be truly great in heaven. Roger, I look forward to being reunited with you in the kingdom of our great God and Father.

Roger was an inspirational worship leader, from my time in UCO, to family life many years later at Christ the King. So many of his songs ring in my ears, but now he will be singing "Worthy is the Lamb!" before the Lamb Himself! What a great man of God. The world is the less, but Heaven is enriched by his passing!

Holtz family, especially Bridget: I am so sorry for your loss. I was so blessed by Roger's musical leadership at Christ The King and contribution to the 'Psalms In His Presence" albums, which I've often played for my mother in her suffering because she loves the Psalms, the words are easy to hear, and the melodies are beautiful. Roger struck me as a humble man, too. May the Lord bring his soul quickly to Himself, and comfort you in your sorrow.

Dearest Kathy, Bridget, Margaret and Christine,

We've lately been listening and singing along together with the Word of God Chorus and Orchestra on YouTube. How inspiring it's been to hear Roger's majestic voice sing, "Proclaim His marvelous deeds to all the nations!" It lifts our hearts with such joy and excitement to give glory to God. Surely, most surely, Roger will be on his way to leading one or more of the heavenly choirs of saints and angels! We will always remember him. You are all in our hearts and prayers. With much love, Helen and Dave Came

I've known Roger for a long time. For the first 4-5 years of The Choices We Face EWTN program he and Joan Burton and others provided a music segment each week. But more than that he lifted the hearts and minds of so many of us to the Lord all these years. Less than two weeks ago Anne and I found ourselves at Mass next to Roger and Kathy - w ho were praying so devoutly - at the annual Memorial Day Mass at Olivet Cemetery in Chelsea, near the graves of my parents and Tim Cirner and so many other wonderful people. And now we will accompany Roger to that same cemetery and look forward now even more to the glorious day of resurrection when we will see each other again, transfigured by the Glory of the Risen Christ. Thank you Lord for Roger. Bring him quickly into your presence.

I knew Roger for over 40 years and whilenhis musical ability could be intimidating, his main focus seemed to be how excellent music gave glory to God. He would lead the choir in singing, yes, but would teach us why we were singing, and how to use music to worship, not to gain praise. He was genuinely moved when the Holy Spirit would make us sound better than we did in practice. Roger was a model of service to God’s people in both small groups and giant conferences. Our family will be always grateful for his self-sacrificin g assistance to my Dad in leading times of editing and then singing my Dad’s songs together. What a blessing! Now the heavenly choirs welcome our brother. You will be so kissed!

Beautiful tribute to a wonderful, godly man. Roger was a mentor, a teacher, an encouragement. He understood worship through music and gave us that gift! He is deeply missed. We love you, Holtz family, and grieve with you as we say goodbye.
