Stewart Spencer Elliott born in Ottawa, Canada to Edward Procter and Eleanor Roosevelt Elliott, passed away on January 15, 2025, at his home of 39 years in Chelsea, Michigan. He was 82 years old.

Stewart studied architecture, art and sociology in college that lead to a lifelong career in building, design, teaching and writing. His professional journey began with the renovation of historic New England timber frame homes, eventually expanding to the construction of new, energy efficient structures. His work, driven by a love for sustainable design became his passion.

Stewart married Cynthia Kreiter on July 10, 1986, in a ceremony aboard a sailboat on Lake Michigan, off the shores of Holland, Michigan. After they married, they bought an empty rundown house without heat or water. Together they renovated it living with 2 young children, that were proud to be the only house with a dumpster in the front yard.

Stewart is survived by his wife Cindy, his son Aaron Caswell (Stephanie), stepdaughter Alison Bertram (Chris Hall), stepson Collin Bertram (Erica) and cherished grandchildren, Piper, Finn and Leo. He is also survived by his siblings Ted, Lauren and Eleanor.

Stewart was an energetic and enthusiastic person that entered any situation with intensity, dedication and love. He loved to write and draw, creating many memories for his family and friends with his drawings. He loved being outdoors and spent a lot of time with his family hiking, kayaking, sailing, bicycling and traveling. He loved his pets, especially his Sophie Rose. He was a godsend to many, doing home repairs and projects for them. His family has a wealth of loving memories and will deeply miss him.

In keeping with Stewart’s wishes, there will be no public service. A private family gathering will be held to honor his memory.

I will remember Stewart as one of the nicest people I ever met, who had a great sense of humor. He was married to one of my best friends, and the three of us shared some wonderful meals and conversation.

I live in Van Buren st in Chelsea and met Stewart a few years ago when he was walking Sophie and I was walking my dog junebug. Our dogs both had the same personality and loved to see each other on the street. I remember Stewart as a really friendly person and easy to talk with. I'll miss seeing him in the neighborhood.
