of Chelsea, Michigan, formerly of Hoboken, New Jersey, age 75, died peacefully, surrounded by family on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at University of Michigan Hospital. He was born July 30, 1948 in Ipojuca, Brazil, the son of Maria Jose Demelo.
Marcos lived a life full of extremes and diverse experiences, only a few of which can be listed here. He moved to the United States when he was 8 years old. He attended Lansing Community College and Michigan State University. Marcos worked as an Electronics Engineer, employed most recently by Norcon Technologies, Inc. in New York City. He was also a fashion photographer in Chicago in the 1980s, recognized for his gift of bringing the beauty out of others. Marcos was a charismatic and fascinating man and a born storyteller who could strike up a conversation with anybody. He was a superb cook and loved to feed people whom he loved. He cared deeply for plants and animals and could seemingly heal any ailment in any being. He was larger than life in his compassion, stubbornness, generosity, and resilience. Importantly, he had a strong heart.
On July 20, 1994, he married Simone Leal Pereira, and she survives. Other survivors include his daughter, Brigitte Demelo (Isaac Zerkle) of Boston, MA; a sister, Maria Jose Da Silva of Brazil; and his dear friend of 45 years, Kathleen M. McGuire of Dexter, MI. He is preceded in death by his parents and other siblings.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Humane Society of Huron Valley, St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Criança Não é de Rua.
