Obituaries

Marian Elizabeth Schultz passed away at age 98 on Saturday, June 3, 2023, surrounded by family at the Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born October 8, 1924, in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of Earl and Alma (Gfeller) Southard.

She was married to Wilfred Henry “Wil” Schultz for over 72 years before he passed away in 2015. Marian and Wil had four boys. Marian was immensely proud of her boys, their spouses, and their families, each of which has folded Marian’s values and caring nature into their own lives.

Marian and Wil travelled extensively, visiting over ten countries and 49 states. After retirement, they bought a motor home and made that their primary form of travel for 20 years, always making time each summer for special travels with each grandchild. Marian had such a warm and welcoming personality that she had a “following” of innumerable friends of all ages. In fact, many of Marian’s great-grandchildren fondly remember her as one of their childhood best friends. She also loved to spend time with her family at Pearl, Donner, or Gull Lakes.

Her loving nature led Marian into nursing and many other caregiver roles. She also had a passion for gardening, nature, cooking, and painting. Her paintings grace the homes of many of her family members. She was a long-time member of Augsburg Lutheran Church in Toledo, Ohio, before moving to Dexter, Michigan, in 2003, and joining Zion Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor.

Survivors include four sons, Bill (Ginny) of Novato, California, Ken (Pat) of Pinckney, Michigan, Larry (Marie) of Jackson, Michigan, and Ron (Nancy) of Augusta, Michigan; twelve grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wil; her brother, Harold; her sisters, Margie and Eleanor; and her daughter-in-law, Marie.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 8, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the main chapel of Chelsea Retirement Community, with the Rev. Kurt Hutchens officiating. Burial of ashes will follow at Oak Grove East Cemetery in Chelsea. Memorial contributions may be made to Arbor Hospice or the UMRC-Porter Hills Foundation (affiliated with the Chelsea Retirement Community). For UMRC, please indicate "CRC Programming" in the subject line. Arrangements were entrusted to Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.
