of Chelsea, Michigan, age 91, died Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born February 9, 1922 in Germany, the daughter of Albert & Elisabeth (Trabant) Amelang.

 

Penny immigrated to the United States in 1929 and lived in Detroit until she was a young adult.  She became a US Citizen in 1931.  Penny lived in Grosse Pointe Farms for 55 years. She  was a longtime member of the Grosse Pointe Farms Boat Club and was active in the Grosse Pointe SOC (Services for Older Citizens).

On July 5, 1944, she married William V. DeGalan in Georgia, and he preceded her in death on November 2, 1996. Survivors include two sons, Dean (Cynthia) DeGalan of Dexter and Brian (Leslie) DeGalan of Grand Rapids; three grandchildren, Lauren DeGalan, Shelby DeGalan, Elizabeth (Brennan McDonough) Matthews; two great-grandchildren, Ella and Sophie; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Melitta Bauer, Hertha Gruenkorn, Minerva Hintzen, and Katchen Werner.

A memorial service was held Monday, October 14, 2:00 pm at Chelsea Retirement Community’s Main Chapel, with Rev. Cathy Rafferty officiating.  Her ashes will be placed at the columbarium of St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Heritage Foundation at Chelsea Retirement Community, 805 W. Middle St.,Chelsea, MI 48118. Arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel.
