Dr. Winslow G. Fox

Winslow Grosvenor Fox, M.D. took his last breath on Saturday, March 18, 2017.  He practiced family medicine in Ann Arbor for 34 years and served on the staff at St Joseph Mercy Hospital.  Many will remember his kind smile, tender demeanor, and eagerness to share the promises of his heavenly father.

Winslow was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, the 3rd of 4 children born to Howard Stowell Fox and Dorothy Prentice Fox.  Inspired by Albert Schweitzer’s reverence for life and desire to alleviate suffering, he studied medicine at the University of Chicago (M.D. 1948). While singing in the choir he met his future bride, Elizabeth Ferwerda.  The two were drawn together by their desire to do missionary work.  Married in 1945, they went to Puerto Rico where Winslow served as a doctor in Humacao.  Their time as medical missionaries ended abruptly when the Army summoned him to serve as a physician for a Puerto Rican regiment in the Korean Conflict. Winslow quickly moved his wife and 2 daughters to be near his brother in Ann Arbor.  On his return, Winslow and Elizabeth raised their family, often filling their home with music and people from other countries.  They were very active in both the First United Methodist Church and The Word of God Community.  Later they attended St. Luke Lutheran Church and the University Lutheran Chapel (ULC).
