of Grass Lake, MI, age 89, died Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Jackson, Michigan (Allegience Hospital ER). He was born July 28, 1925 in Azalia, Michigan, the son of Harrison R. & Elvira M. (Featheringill) Heldt.

Mr. Heldt lived in Chelsea since 1977, coming from Ann Arbor.  Carl was a WWII Veteran, serving in the Navy on Okinawa where he earned the Purple Heart among other medals.  He was the Director of Veterans Affairs in Washtenaw County for 27 years, retiring in 1979.  He also worked at Seitz Tavern for 30 years.  Carl was a member of the Chelsea Olive Lodge #156, Order of the Eastern Star #122, Ann Arbor Golden Rule #159, American Legion, VFW, DAR, Zal Gaz Grotto, & Chelsea Senior Citizens. He volunteered many hours at Chelsea Community Hospital. Carl was past Commander of the Washtenaw County Council of Veterans, past President of the Michigan Association of Veterans Counselors.  Carl was also a member of the Elks Lodge #325, Ann Arbor Moose Lodge,  Marine Corps league in Washtenaw Co., Military Order of Purple Heart Chapter #37, Lansing.

He married Sarah Jane (Sally) Banks in Dumont, NJ on December 21, 1947, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 20, 2003. On December 10, 2005, he married Audrey (Musolf) Satterthwaite in Chelsea, and she survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Denise Martell of Chelsea; 3 grandsons, Jason (Adrian), Daniel, and Douglas Martell; two great-grandchildren, Katelyn & Joshua; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.   He also leaves three step-children and their families, Dawn (Tim) Clark, Lynsey Clark, and Matthew Chrisinske, Mark (Suzanne) Bucholz, Sarah Bucholz, Rev. Kyle (Loren) Bucholz, Claudette (GH) O’Dell, Mark Kindy, Molly (John) Durham and Grant Durham.   He was preceded in death by one son, Paul in 1967, three brothers, Russell in 1974, Delbert in 1987 and Warren in 2014; his sister Ruth Hansen in 2004; and his parents.

   Funeral services were held Monday, January 12 , 1:00 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. Joy Barrett and Rev. Kyle Bucholz officiating. The family received friends Sunday, 1-5 pm, with a Masonic Service at 5:00 pm.  A private burial will be held at Washtenong Memorial Park in Ann Arbor.  Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
