of Chelsea, MI, age 103, died Saturday, November 10, 2018 at the Chelsea Retirement Community.  She was born November 10, 1915 in Glasgow, Scotland, the daughter of John & Ellen (Bain) Masterson.

Jean graduated from Cass Tech High School in Detroit, and was a State Swimming Champion.  She was a cook at Chelsea High School for many years.  She was active in the North Lake United Methodist Church and later Chelsea First United Methodist Church, and she was a Sunday School teacher and involved in the United Methodist Women.  She enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

On April 6, 1935, Jean married Herman Ashley and he preceded her in death on September 3, 2001.  Survivors include two sons, Richard (Judy) Ashley of Chelsea, John (Suzan) Ashley of Brooklyn, MI; one daughter, Mary Ellen (Henry) Douglass of Waldorf, MD; 3 grandchildren, Alan Ashley, Barbara Holiday, Kimberly White; 3 great-grandchildren, Courtney White, Ethan Holiday, and Joshua Ashley.

No memorial services are planned.  A private burial was held in Oak Grove East Cemetery in Chelsea.  Memorial contributions may be made to the UMRC Foundation or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were entrusted to Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.
