of Chelsea, MI, age 82, died Friday, August 24, 2018 at the Chelsea Retirement Community. He was born September 6, 1935 in Chelsea, Michigan, the son of Emmett Matthew & Oleta (Hutzel) Hankerd.

Bud graduated from Chelsea High School in 1953. He worked for his dad as a young boy until his late 20's. Bud was a member of the Chelsea Fire Department for over 50 years, and was Chief for 13 years. He retired from Dana Corporation.  Bud was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed cutting and splitting wood, woodworking, and was famous for snow removal for the whole neighborhood.

On September 10, 1955, he married Jeanette Mae Bertke in Chelsea,  and she preceded him in death on Dec. 7, 2001. Survivors include a son, Emmett Matthew “Matt” (Rosemary) Hankerd of Chelsea; two daughters, Lou Ann Hankerd of Dexter and Cheryl (Doug) Pagliarini of Chelsea; 8 grandchildren, Dan Kloosterman, Sean & Mike Hankerd, Patrick, Alexis & Derek Jolly, Stephen Hunert and Samantha Pagliarini; and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Sr. Helen Hankerd, OP of Chelsea, Therese (David) Scharphorn of Chelsea, Mary Houle of Chelsea, Eileen Brooks of Jackson, Rose Anne Salvante of Florida.

The Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, August 28, 11:00 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, Chelsea, with the V. Rev. Dr. William J. Canon Turner officiating.  The family will receive friends at Cole Funeral Chapel Monday from 2-4 pm & 6-8 pm and at the church Tuesday 10-11 am.  A private burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Chelsea. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church (14200 Old US 12, Chelsea, MI 48118) or Arbor Hospice (2366 Oak Valley Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48103).
