of Chelsea, Michigan died unexpectedly Friday, October 13, 2017 at his home. He was born May, 1933 in Long Beach, CA, the son of William and Lois (Gearhart) Lockwood. Bill earned his Bachelors degree in Geology from Fresno State College and a Ph.D in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley. He served in the US Army from 1957-1959. Bill was Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, retiring in 1999. He specialized in the Balkans, Romany/Gypsy culture, ethnicity, and the anthropology of food and foodways. He enjoyed food and wine and was a long-time member of the Grand Crew and Culinary Historians of Ann Arbor. He also enjoyed mushrooming and was a beekeeper.

His wife of 60 years, Yvonne Rachel Hiipakka, survives Bill, as does his sister Jacqueline Cocciolo, nephew Harry Cocciolo, and niece Catherine Davis of California.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Silver Maples Silver Lining Fund, 100 Silver Maples Drive, Chelsea, MI 48118
