Doris Jean Hammel of Chelsea, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her husband and children on Saturday, August 12, 2017.

   She was born March 4, 1939 in Flint, Michigan. She was the daughter of Roy and Blanche Cora (Lockwood) McKellar, who have preceded her in death. Doris was the eldest of 8 children. Her siblings, who loved her dearly, are Ronald, Raymond (Shirley), Stanley, Lawrence (MaryAnne), Elizabeth, Dorothea and Norma.

    On August 18, 1962, Doris was married to James Walter Hammel. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and very giving to others. She graduated in 1980 from Chelsea Adult High. Doris was also an active member in the Modern Mothers Club, Twin Club and a Den Mother to Cub Scout Den Pack #455.

    In 1988, Doris started The Chelsea Garden Club at her home. She had a great passion for gardening and wanted a place where other gardeners could come and share ideas and projects. She also utilized her gardening abilities and talents at several local Chelsea businesses. She loved to read and spend time with family, especially her grandchildren.

    Doris is survived by her loving and devoted husband Jim, of 54 years, her children, Deidre Marie (Stephen) Emmert, David James (Karen)Hammel, Daniel Lawrence (Debra) Hammel and Karin Sue Carlson; her grandchildren Cody, Daryn, Alyssa, Katherine, Russell and Amanda; great grandchildren Dallas and Colton; and several nieces and nephews.

   The Hammel family would like to give special thanks for the loving care and friendship to our family to Elizabeth, Zach and Anna Adams, Joy Fried, Theresa Gallas and Arbor Hospice.

   The Hammel Family will hold a Memorial service followed by a Celebration of Life on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at 2:00 pm at 833 Barrett Road, Jackson, Michigan 49202. Arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel.
