Chelsea, MI, age 76, died Friday, November 8, 2013 at his home with his family. He was born May 8, 1937 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the son of Fredrick & Gertrude (Whitcomb) Lorenz.

Jim graduated from Ann Arbor High School and Washtenaw Community College. He worked for Argus Camera, Hoover-Sperry, and KJ Law, before creating his own company, Michigan NDT Inc.  Jim was a member of the Chelsea First United Methodist Church, where he taught adult Sunday School, led the youth fellowship for many years, was a Lay Speaker, and served on many committees. They also attended Christian Home Group.  He loved playing bridge with his friends, sailing boats, and downhill skiing, in addition to being an official at the Chelsea Ice Skating Rink, a Boy Scout leader, an author, and a licensed Ham Radio enthusiast.

On July 6, 1955, he married Frances Arlene Dibble at Westside Methodist Church in Ann Arbor, and she survives. Other survivors include three children, Doug (Kim) Lorenz of Green, OH, Tammy Nelson of Tujunga, CA, Matt (Kathy) Lorenz of Grass Lake; a brother, Dwayne “ Pete” (Linda) Lorenz of Tennessee; and three grandchildren, Courtney, Joseph, and Sarah Lorenz.  Jim was preceded in death by his brothers, Dennis and Gary.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 12, 11:00 a.m at Chelsea First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Joy Barrett officiating.  Burial took place at Washtenong Cemetery in Ann Arbor. The family received friends at Cole Funeral Chapel Monday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. and at the church Tuesday from 10-11 a.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to Chelsea First United Methodist Church, 128 Park Street, Chelsea, MI 48118 or the Michigan Parkinson's Foundation, 30400 Telegraph Road, Suite 150, Bingham Farms, MI 48025.
