of Chelsea, Michigan, formerly of Ypsilanti, age 96, died Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born December 13, 1916 in Knox County, Kentucky, the daughter of Henry & Minnie (Tye) Young.

Gladys moved from Kentucky to Ann Arbor in 1937.  She lived her entire married life in Ypsilanti until she moved to the Chelsea Retirement Community in 2007.  She graduated from Willow Run High School in 1969, earned an Associates Degree from Washtenaw Community College, then attended the University of Michigan.  She was a charter member of Forest Avenue Baptist Church in Ypsilanti.
She married G. Wayne Spike in 1941, who preceded her in death in May of 1998. Survivors include a daughter, Ruth (Mark) Theobald of Bloomfield Hills; three sons, Rev. Daniel Spike of Algonquin, IL, Fred (Karen) Spike of Wilmington, NC, Paul (Susan) Spike of Ypsilanti; 6 grandchildren, Paul Bell, Kathie (Darryl) Turner, Scott (Martha) Spike, Jess (Nan) Spike, Rachel Spike, and Ben (Kristen) Spike; and; 7 great-grandchildren, Preston & Julian Spike, Nathaniel &  Joanna Turner,  Otis & Nevis Spike, and Elijah Spike; and many nieces & nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather, Embie Fore; a daughter, Dr. Mary Elizabeth “Skippy” Bell, one sister, and 4 brothers.
A private graveside service was held at Oak Grove Cemetery in Chelsea.  A private memorial service will be held in the Spring.
