of Chelsea, Michigan, formerly of Blissfield, Saginaw, age 96, died Sunday, July 8, 2012 at Chelsea Retirement Community. He was born November 16, 1915 in McGregor, Michigan, the son of Robert C. and Elizabeth (Basler) Nichol.

Grant worked for Great Lakes Sugar Co. from 1940-43, then served in World War II with the 80th Infantry in Europe.  After the war, he worked for Farmers and Manufacturers Beet Sugar Association for three years, then worked with Monitor Sugar Co. of Bay City until his retirement as VP of Agriculture in 1981. Grant dealt with growers and farmers improving farming practices, and he received the Distinguished Service Award from MSU in 1981. He was a member of the Congregational Church in Saginaw.


On July 13, 1941, he married Viola Lorene Prillwitz in Benton Harbor, and she preceded him in death on May 14, 2010. Survivors include two daughters, Beth Bodley of Dexter, and Linda (Gregory) Anderson of Matawan; three grandchildren, Rick, Lisa, and David; two great-grandchildren, Grant and Chloe. He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

A memorial service was held Friday, July 27, 10:30 am at Chelsea Retirement Community, with Rev. Cathy Rafferty  officiating.  Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Saginaw.  Memorial contributions may be made to Chelsea Retirement Community or Arbor Hospice.  Arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel.
