Of Chelsea, Michigan, age 74, died Sunday, January 30, 2022, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after a short illness. He was born June 17, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of David George and Genevieve “Genny” E. (Richard) Poppenger.
 
Jim worked as a Folder Operator at Cushing-Malloy in Ann Arbor for over 40 years. He and his wife, Diana, loved to travel together, with family and groups. Their most recent trips were to Panama, New England, and Albuquerque. Jim loved all sports and was an avid Tigers and U of M fan. He enjoyed watching the Olympics, football and NASCAR, especially at MIS. He loved gardening and doing yard work; listening to music, attending events in the Chelsea community, and going to museums. Jim was easy-going and always willing to help others in need.
 
    On November 10, 1989, Jim married Diana Lynn Lawrence at the Dexter United Methodist Church and she survives. He is also survived by sisters, Cheryl (Gary) Lavender of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jane (Steve Vogel) Poppenger also of Albuquerque, NM; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Douglas Poppenger; and brother-in-law, David Lawrence, who passed away a few hours after Jim.
 
A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 5, 2022 1:00 pm at Oak Grove East Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith In Action, 603 S. Main St., Chelsea, MI 48118 or to a charity of your choice.
