Of Chelsea, age 18, died Saturday, March 6, 2021. He was born May 7, 2002, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, the son of Michael John and Shannon Elizabeth (O’Neill) Happy. Shaun was a senior at Chelsea High School where he was a member of the cross country and track teams. He attended Main Street Church in Chelsea with his family whom he loved. An unwavering goofball, Shaun never failed to bring smiles and laughter to the people he loved. He was full of empathy and persistent in his mission to take care of those around him. Shaun was a basketball fanatic and could frequently be found shooting hoops with his friends in his driveway or at the high school gym. He enjoyed many hours skateboarding with his friends and fishing for bass with his family up north. He loved watching the Michigan Wolverines play football, basketball, and hockey with his family. He had a passionate love for animals, with a special fondness for his cat Brown, his bunny Rupert, his childhood dog Sam, and horses. He found many stray animals and took the time to find them homes and to offer the care they needed.

Anyone who knew Shaun knows that he was an absolute light. He was one of the biggest hearts ever to have graced this world. He loved harder than anyone you will ever meet. That light needs to live on - in his family, friends, and the community that loved him.

Shaun is survived by his parents; his brother, Lou, and sister, Mandy, both of Chelsea; grandparents, Michael and Marilyn Happy of Roseville; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Carol O'Neill.

Due to Covid 19 restrictions, a memorial service limited to invited guests was held Saturday, Mar. 13, 2021, at Main Street Church in Chelsea, with Pastor Josh Kuck officiating.   A private burial was held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Chelsea. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made by clicking this link:  Fundraiser: Shaun Happy Memorial. The money raised will be used to support youth mental health locally. Arrangements were entrusted to Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.

Happy Family, there aren’t enough words to express how shocked and saddened we were to hear of your sweet Shaun’s passing. After receiving the news, Eliza, Abbie and Joe were reminiscing and sharing pictures of their cute little friend group that they had together at Monteith and Brownell, and sharing memories with former teachers as well.. please know that we share your grief and pain and you are in our thoughts and prayers constantly.

Hi guys.
My heart has been so distraught for all of you and for what you are having to endure. I constantly remember when he and Mandy came in to help us in our classroom Shaun.... what incredible shinning lights they were to the kids and such a great energy for us. I will send you a video of one of the days we were in the gym and you can hear you Shannon telling the kids to look at Miss Linny ( being an ass as usual:).... my love, my energy, my heart goes to you ... my mom has been constantly praying and has also been very affected by this. May God's everlasting love and light shine upon you all now and forever. I am here and would love to go quietly and talk when you need.

To the family, I would like to share a memory I had with Shaun a couple years ago. During school, he would always check on me and make sure I was okay. He was a great friend to me. One day I was having such a rough day due to home life problems and he skipped class just to talk to me and make sure I was okay. He didn’t care about a stupid grade in the class, all he cared about was making sure I was okay. He always cared for his friends and me myself. He has such a big heart and and such a caring sole :( he will be missed so much and prayers are sent out to the family from mine.

Mike and family,

I had the pleasure of having Mike as a Community Journalism professor at University of Detroit Mercy. We took the class at the Detroit News building. I am so sorry to hear about your son. You are all in my thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.
