of Chelsea, MI, died Thursday, September 22, 2016 at home peacefully at the age of 78. Karen was born April 16, 1938, a twin daughter to John Barclay Roche and Lucille Helen (Flahrety) Roche. Much of Karen's youth was spent traveling with her family within the United Stated. She graduated from Newton High School in New Jersey before attending Vassar College.

On August 27, 1960, Karen married the love of her life, John Michael Knafl, who enlisted in the United States Army while she was working in the intelligence community. John preceded her in death in 2014, as did her eldest and youngest sons. Karen relocated to Chelsea to be close to her second son, Paul, and his wife, Pamela, who survive her. She also leaves behind a brother, John Barclay Roche Jr. and two sisters, Mary Karol Citti, and Rochelle Bain.

Karen was an active and devout member of her church and an active member of her community. Karen devoted time to her favorite charities, St. Judes Children's Hospital and The Muscular Dystrophy Association. Karen will be remembered for her spirited nature and her love.

Mass will be said in Karen's memory at St. Mary Catholic Church in Chelsea on Sunday, September 25th. Karen will be laid to rest, next to her husband, at Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesville, North Carolina. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Judes Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, MI.
